the ethics of transformational leadership

For us, ethical behaviour and genuine respect for people, their views, their needs and their potential lies at the heart of outstanding transformational leadership.

This may sound quite straightforward, but in our experience few people indeed have a natural gift for respect, or a strong moral compass - it's something we all have to work at.

From Confucius to Kant, throughout history philosophers have placed respect at the root of their approach to ethics. For Confucius, jen - often translated as "humanity" or "humaneness" - indicates an attitude of respect toward self and others. An attitude which qualifies the individual for inclusion within society - and, indeed, makes society possible at all.

Why is this so fundamental to transformational leadership? Because when people come together to achieve something, as at work, often the biggest barrier to effective cooperation is the fear of conflict, of stepping on someone's toes, of doing or saying something that might cause disagreement. And being human - showing respect and caring for each other and the group - is the single most useful remedy for this.
